NBA champion expects Victor Wembanyama to repeat LeBron James feat in third season with San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama is two years into his NBA career, and he still has a lot to prove.

Wembanyama was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2023 with an enormous reputation as one of the greatest ever prospects.

Some suggested that he could have a similar impact to LeBron James and even be in the GOAT debate when his career is over.

He has certainly shown signs of living up to his potential, but he remains a long way from the level most expect him to reach.

Well, NBA champion Kendrick Perkins has now predicted Wemby to achieve something this season that James also did in his third year.

Kendrick Perkins expects big things from Victor Wembanyama in the 2025-26 season

James was drafted by the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers in 2004 and took three seasons to lead them to the playoffs.

The Spurs have not yet made the postseason with Wembanyama, but Perkins thinks they now have the roster to follow in the 2007 Cavs’ footsteps.

“I’m looking at the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama. It is time,” Perkins shared his expectations for next season.

“When you start comparing him and saying he’s the greatest prospect since LeBron James… It’s Victor’s third year. In LeBron James’ third year, he took that leap and got [the Cavaliers] to the postseason.

“And when you look at what the Spurs have done, they have surrounded him with some nice pieces. You look at a De’Aaron Fox, who just signed a contract extension, we know what he can bring to the table: All-Star-level play.

“Harrison Barnes is a 3-and-D guy at the wing position. They did really well in the draft. They have some nice young pieces with an evil genius in their new head coach.

“I’m looking at the Spurs and Wemby to go out here and make some noise and move up in the Western Conference to make the postseason.”

Chiney Ogwumike picks Dallas Mavericks over San Antonio Spurs as most improved team

Former WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike believes another Western Conference team will improve more than the Spurs next season.

She thinks the Dallas Mavericks can make the playoffs in the loaded Western Conference thanks to another exciting prospect, Cooper Flagg.

“I want to pivot to Dallas because I think some people might be looking past them, especially given Kyrie Irving’s lack of availability due to injury,” Ogwumike said.

“But still, their starting lineup is going to be solid, adding [D’Angelo Russell] there, who’s a professional point guard. You’ve got Cooper freakin’ Flagg joining, which is going to help bring that positivity back to the city.

“And then, has anyone had a better summer than Klay Thompson? Spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, all that type of stuff, going back out there knocking down shots.

“You have [Daniel] Gafford and [Dereck] Lively III. This is going to be one of the biggest groups, and of course, helming the interior is Anthony Davis.

“They were not good last year, obviously fizzled out, but then maybe they will find that continuity as they try to bide time while Kyrie comes back.”
