Derrick White and the Boston Celtics faced off against the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals.
The Boston Celtics’ 2023-24 roster was led by the dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. But players like Derrick White and Jrue Holiday were the locker room leaders for the C’s.
Considering how well the roster was constructed, the Celtics went all the way and lifted the Larry O’Brien trophy in the summer of 2024.
They did so by dominating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals as the C’s registered a 4-1 win over their Western Conference rivals.
Derrick White looks back at losing Game 4 of the 2024 NBA Finals
Despite the presence of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks were no match for the Celtics in the first three games of the 2024 NBA Finals.
It was evident from the Mavs being down 3-0 in the series as they failed to breach the 100-point mark in each matchup.
However, the Mavericks bounced back in Game 4 with a phenomenal 122-84 win over the Celtics. White recently looked back at that defeat on the White Noise podcast.
“It was kinda strange. We’re up 3-0, and we lose game four, and everyone is a little bit down. After the game, I go outside, and everybody is kinda quiet,” White said.
He added: “Everyone was like, ‘Are you okay?’ I’m like, ‘We are up 3-1.’ It was weird because winning is obviously being an NBA champion, but it was just one loss. That’s how I took it.”
Derrick White ensured Boston Celtics players knew they were in a ‘good spot’
While losing one game after winning three straight shouldn’t be a huge deal, the wide margin could have stripped the Celtics’ momentum.
That almost happened, but then White stepped up as a leader and ensured that the team’s morale was back before Game 5 of the series.
“Obviously, you wanted to win. You don’t want to play with your food, and anything can happen in any series,” White continued.
He concluded by stating: “But when I went out there and everyone was quiet, I was like, ‘Come on, we’re good. We are in a great spot. Now we get to go back home and win on our home court.’”
The Celtics did just that as they registered a blowout 106-88 win in Game 5 and clinched the 18th championship in franchise history.
