New York Knicks stars Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson have given their verdicts on Luka Doncic’s new deal.
After being discarded by the Dallas Mavericks to the LA Lakers in a blockbuster trade, Luka Doncic has committed his future to his new team.
On August 2, Doncic signed a three-year contract extension with the Lakers, where he will earn $165 million.
The move provides Doncic and the Lakers with security, and the team are now building around him as they look to the future, to the possible annoyance of LeBron James.
Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart released a new edition of their Roommates podcast, checking in on news from across the NBA.
Amid criticism from Kendrick Perkins over hosting the podcast midseason, the pair vowed they would continue for the upcoming campaign.
When the topic of Doncic’s new contract came up, Brunson admitted he first thought the Lakers star had been underpaid.
He said: “It seemed low, then I realized he got traded and couldn’t get the max or whatever.”
Doncic had appeared set to sign the expensive supermax contract with the Dallas Mavericks, but the moment he was traded away, he was ineligible to do so.
Hart joked that he would be taking the bar set by the Luka Doncic into his own next contract negotiations.
He said with a smile: “That’s the bar, now when I go in my contract situation Luka got three [years] $165m, I gotta go in three for $157m, you know what I mean, that’s a good level of parity.”
Josh Hart has less than half Luka Doncic’s deal
There is a long time before Josh Hart will have to negotiate his next NBA contract.
In 2023 he signed a four-year contract on top of his remaining one-year deal, worth $81 million, securing his Knicks future through the 2027-28 season.
Brunson, a former teammate of Doncic in Dallas, signed a four-year $156.5 million deal in 2024, just under the amount Hart joked he would be seeking.
