Canelo Alvarez has two fights he wishes he could have had.
Canelo addressed the Terence Crawford rematch first — the fight that Crawford’s retirement denied him after losing the undisputed middleweight/” class=”internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2″>super middleweight title in September 2025. A second name emerged from further back in Canelo’s career: Floyd Mayweather.
“The rematch with Mayweather — right now it’s Crawford, but at that point it was the rematch with Mayweather. I think it could have happened like three, four years after. Never close. No, he didn’t want it,” Canelo
The original fight came in September 2013, when Canelo was 23 years old. Mayweather outclassed him over twelve rounds — the speed differential, the accuracy, the defensive mastery made it look routine.
The rematch he wanted, when the experience gap had closed, was never available. Mayweather had no interest in giving it to him. The Crawford and the Mayweather loss is something Alvarez will have to deal with.
