MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – South Carolina women’s soccer (1-0-0) opened its season with a 1-0 win on the road against College of Charleston (0-1-0). Freshman forward Mackenzie Johnson broke the tie in the 82nd minute with her first collegiate goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johnson earned the game winning goal when Maggie Taitano won the ball at midfield and passed it through to Johnson, whose shot from outside of the 18 gave South Carolina the late lead
- The Gamecocks handed the Cougars their first loss at home since October 12, 2023 when they lost a conference match to Monmouth
- South Carolina put nine shots on goal to College of Charleston’s one, forcing the Cougar goalkeeper to make eight saves
- After a possession battle throughout the first half, the Gamecocks opened the second frame with two quick shots to get the offense going
- The Cougars best chance came when they threatened with a free kick just outside the 6-yard box in the 65th minute, but the Gamecock defense cleared the ball away to keep it even
